if you know me at all... i love living things. especially babies and animals. in the past month, i've acquired an aquarium. in this aquarium there is... - a sucker fish - 4 tetra fish - 2 shrimp - 2 aquatic froggies it's been quite visually pleasing and it's been making my day to see that my living specimens have survived the day. however... - 2 days upon setting up the bio-living area, one of the aquatic froggies died. * quite a dramatic death... - it was sprawled out on the plastic, green plant in the middle of the tank... (was expecting its death soon due to the fact that the poor froggie plummeted an extreme height to the floor when attempting to and successfully escaping a tupper ware bucket.) then... - about 2 weeks later, one of the tetra fish disappeared into thin air. * no traces of it in the filter, in the rocks, or in the plastic structures in the tank. "strange," i thought. then... - about a day later, a shrimp was missing! * no traces of it either... "strange, again," i pondered. then i thought, "could spanky (the survivor froggie) have eaten the fish and the shrimp?" * it couldn't be so because the fish was half spanky's size and the shrimp was about two-thirds his size. the only way he could have eaten the poor things was if he tore them apart and he had no claws or teeth. plus, there didn't seem to be any struggle around the tank. THEN... - yesterday, ANOTHER tetra fish was missing!!! * 15 minutes before the discovery of a missing fish, i had checked the tank and there were three of them. "does spanky look a little chunky to you?" i asked my roommate. she said, "yeah, i'm sure spanky ate the fish." i was skeptical until... "SPANKY ATE THE FISH!!! YOU CAN SEE IT!!!" she screamed. i still didn't believe her and told her that the red and blue lines were part of spanky's circulatory system. however... when you looked more closely... there, through spanky's slightly transparent skin, you could see the fish's EYEBALL!!! spanky had been swallowing the fishies whole!! quite a big appetite for the little bugger. mystery solved. now i have to get more fish to maintain the liveliness of my aquarium and make sure that they are feisty enough to fight off the carnivorous aquatic frog, spanky. |
